What is Firestopping?

Firestopping is a form of passive fire protection and/or compartmentalization that restores the fire resistant rating of floors and walls by sealing openings and joints with firestopping materials, thereby helping to prevent the spread of the fire.  If these openings and joints are not sealed it cancels out the fire-resistance rating of the walls and floors that are required by the fire code of where the building is located.  Just as with active fire protection systems (Sprinklers, fire extinguishers, etc.) maintenance of passive fire protection systems is imperative to maintain a building’s fire resistance rating.
